Brave Rail Staff Member Endures Severe Wounds During Multiple Stabbing Attack on Express Service

A courageous train staff member who stepped in to protect travelers during a mass knife attack on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Particulars of the Frightening Incident

CCTV video reportedly shows the employee trying to stop the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in the county. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with injured victims running through carriages.

The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Police announced a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Crisis Reaction and Consequences

The incident on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five individuals have since been released from medical care.

A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted police on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "End my life, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous member of rail staff whose family are being supported by trained officers,” said a senior law enforcement official.

Union Response and Calls for Measures

Rail associations were swift to commend employees and demand increased measures. A labor leader said he would be “seeking urgent meetings with authorities, train companies and police to guarantee that we have the strongest possible assistance, resources and robust protocols in place”.

Another union representative urged the train operator and authorities “to move swiftly to review safety, to help the impacted workers, and to make sure nothing like this occurs again”.

Driver Praised for Quick Thinking

The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“He didn’t halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” explained a association representative.

Further Details

Authorities said they got the initial distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness recounted initially thinking if the situation was a Halloween joke, but quickly understood from individuals' expressions that it was serious.

Police have confirmed there is no evidence to suggest the event was a terrorist attack and have asked the public to come forward with any additional information.

Rail services on the impacted route are anticipated to experience disruption until the following day, with passengers recommended to defer their journeys where feasible.

Individuals with information that could assist the inquiry are asked to contact authorities by texting a designated number with a reference code.
