Ceasefire Accord Offers Relief to Gaza, But Anxieties Linger Over What Lies Ahead

Throughout the dawn of Thursday, people witnessed little joy across the Gaza Strip. Reports of the approaching truce had circulated quickly across the devastated territory throughout the evening, marked by occasional shots aimed at the clouds as a form of jubilation, however when daybreak appeared the atmosphere turned to apprehensive waiting.

“Fear continues to grip everyone,” said a female resident in al-Mawasi, the cramped and unsanitary shoreline zone in which a large portion of residents are residing under temporary shelters along with synthetic huts.

“We look forward to a public statement coupled with tangible promises for opening the crossings, allowing food deliveries, and halting the violence, devastation and population transfers.”

In the vicinity, an elderly resident Abbas Hassouna noted that his relatives were hoping for a verified communication and solid commitments to open the transit routes, facilitating nourishment delivery, and ending the fatalities, damage and displacement”.

“After witnessing these changes, only then will we truly believe them. But for now, anxiety continues. They could backtrack without warning or dishonor the deal as before stranding us amid the continuous pattern devoid of progress except more suffering,” said Hassouna, a native of Gaza’s north though he has faced expulsion repeatedly.

Conflicting Feelings Among Locals

Ola al-Nazli, 47 said she had learned regarding the peace deal through her neighbors within the al-Mawasi district. “I did not know about my emotions, about feeling joyful or mournful. We have experienced this many times before, and each time we were disappointed again, so this time anxiety and prudence have reached new heights,” Nazli stated, who had to abandon her home in Gaza City due to the latest military operations there.

“All residents exist in temporary shelters that do not protect from the cold or from the bombing. People possessing resources or work suffered complete loss. That is why any joy we feel is combined with pain and fear. I simply desire that we might exist in safety, away from detonations, avoiding displacement, and that access points will be accessible quickly,” Nazli added.

Aid Measures Ongoing

Aid agencies announced they were getting ready to “flood” Gaza with sustenance and vital provisions. The 20-point plan ensures a boost to relief efforts. The head of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, explained his team stood ready to “scale up its work to meet the dire health needs of patients across Gaza, and to support rehabilitation of the ruined healthcare network”.

The international body dedicated to refugee assistance, hailed the agreement as a “huge relief”, and stated it maintained sufficient food reserves outside Gaza to sustain the devastated territory’s 2.3m population over the next quarter. While increased support has entered the territory during previous days, supplies continue to be highly deficient, aid personnel indicated.

Hope and Anxiety Within Displaced Families

Jihad al-Hilu learned about the development of the ceasefire through a wireless receiver as he sat in his shelter in al-Mawasi. “During that time, I experienced a combination of joy and relief, as if some hope reentered my soul after a long wait. We were longing for this point in time, for the blood to stop and for the slaughter that have destroyed numerous families to conclude,” the 33-year-old Hilu shared.

“At the same time, prevails substantial anxiety that lives within us. We worry that this truce could be short-lived and that conflict may restart as it did before.”

There are also general worries about what peace could deliver to the territory, where more than 90% of dwellings have experienced ruin or destroyed, virtually all public works obliterated and where numerous residents goes hungry every day. More than 67,000 Palestinians overwhelmingly ordinary citizens have lost their lives by the Israeli offensive initiated following of the Hamas raid during late 2023, that resulted in 1,200 deaths similarly mainly ordinary people and 251 people abducted by combatants.

“The main anxiety beyond other issues is the deficiency of protection. Starvation is tolerable, however danger represents the actual calamity. I am concerned that the region may transform into a zone of turmoil controlled by criminal groups and armed factions instead of law and order.”

Current Situation

Witnesses said Israeli forces fired tank shells to stop individuals reentering the northern sector of Gaza on Thursday morning yet mentioned no sounds of fighting or aerial bombardments.

A woman called Nadra Hamadeh, who lost her sister, brother-in-law, two family members and another relative were killed in the war, mentioned her aspiration to travel back from the coastal area to Gaza’s northern part at the earliest opportunity to check on her home, which she assumes to be damaged though not completely ruined.

“My heart is heavy for those who lost their relatives and offspring and homes … As for us, we anticipate going back to our residence that we were forced to abandon. The sensation persists like our spirits were taken from our bodies during our departure,” Hamadeh, 57 said.

“Our hope is that the war ends,
